Sailing Program in Long Beach for People with Intellectual Disabilities

In 2015 the Special Olympics World Summer Games is coming to greater Los Angeles.  This will likely be the largest sporting event in the world that year bringing  thousands of people to the various venues.  Many of the aquatic events will take place in Long Beach .  Through my involvement with the Alamitos Bay Yacht Club and the United States Sailing Center Long Beach which are hosting the sailing venue , I am part of the executive committee planning the the sailing events for 2015.  I  am reaching  out to my network and the business community at large to make them aware of this great program and to get them involved.

Some background. Like the Olympics, the Special Olympics World Summer games are held on a quadrennial basis. They were last held in 2011 in Athens Greece and in 2007 were held in Shanghai China in 2007.   For more information click on this link:

The mission of Special Olympics is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.

Sailing has been a Special Olympic sport for over 30 years. In 2015 We expect teams from up to 40 countries to compete.  Our local mission is to help develop a strong team USA and build a legacy program that continues long after that Special Olympic World Summer Games are over .  We have about three years to pull this together.

This is a “unified” sport in Special Olympics meaning that sailors with disabilities sail with sailors without disabilities in five different classes based on the abilities of the sailors.  Our challenge in Southern California is identify and start working with Special Olympians and their partners.   We have the facilities, equipment and volunteers to make a great program but we need the sailors.

I am asking that you ask your friends and family about anyone  or any organization  they know that would like to participate in our program.  I encourage you to get involved in something that I guarantee will be one of the most rewarding experiences of your life.
